After Steam introduced new payment methods for Indian customers, Google Play has started to accept payment via PayTM. Indian consumers have had issues trying to make payments using Google Play as carrier billing and Debit card support for different operators and banks has been lacking. However, adding the option to pay via PayTM will make Google Play more reachable for the masses.
Steam and Google Play provide region specific pricing for their Apps and Games which makes them more reasonably priced for Indian audiences. However, dealing with payment related issues has been a nightmare for Indian customers. Mobile wallets have begun serving as a viable alternate. They rose to prominence especially after the demonetization move made by the Indian government. PayTM is a widely used wallet and is used as a payment method for Uber, HotStar (a Netflix/Amazon Prime video type site) and now, Google Play.
PayTM allows its users to add money to it via several means such as NetBanking and other cards, and is generally considered more accessible than foreign run payment gateways. PayTM also allows for transmitting money among its users and has been approved by the Indian authorities to set up a Payments Bank.
